Is it possible to get into an accounting career with a serious felony?

  1. Since you'd be handling other people's money, which requires an amount of trust, I would say probably not. You never know though. If you work your way up in a firm & are able to get a sort of mentor in the company, you could earn that trust over a span of years, while you're getting your degree.
  2. sure i'd let you handle my money,as soon as hell freezes. you should've thought about this, before you screwed yourself.
  3. It depends on the felony. If it was financially related (embezzlement, grand theft, etc.) you will probably not be hired by anyone (unless it is a small company that doesn't do background checks on prospective employees). However, if it was something else, and it was a long time ago (7+ yrs.), then it depends on the employer. The best thing you can do is be totally upfront about it when you go in for an interview. You don't want them to find out about it on their own. Don't make excuses for why you did what you did; do own up to what you did and explain how/why you learned from it. Good luck!
  4. That depends on the company's hiring policy -- not upon whether the job applied for is an accounting position. Much of the clerical work done by accountants does not involve direct contact with money. You might consider it as a glorified data-entry position. You will have trouble gaining any position with control over company assets. You would be limited to positions that record transactions related to other people's contol over those assets.
