Is a masters degree necessary for a career in accounting?

I am in my last undergraduate semester, and I’m earning a BA in accounting. I will have met all the requirements to sit for the CPA exam in Texas, but I am wondering if I should pursue a master's degree. I plan on working for one of the Big 4 firms in Houston, TX to get experience and eventually move on to work with small businesses owned by women as an accountant and financial planner. Are there additional benefits of having one or once you're in a company they don't look at that?

  1. I am the corporate controller for a very large construction company. I have neither an MBA or a CPA, but I think in my position that is very rare. From what I've seen, most companies looking for accountants look for CPA first, then an MBA. If it is an either or, I would get your CPA first. Then, land a job with a good company and have them pay for your MBA. Having both should open up many opportunities. Good luck.
