Can you get into the business/accounting field when it is your minor and you have a separate major?

I'm looking to be a sociology major and a business/accounting minor. Would I be able to get a job into the business field? Is it hard?

  1. I was a sociology major. With a business and accounting minor...hmmm, maybe, but probably not... I think its great to get a minor. I had one too, but not in accounting. You will find that the minor is designed to supplement the major with additional coursework or skills that you can obtain from it. However, its not your major. Once you graduate and begin to apply for jobs, not many employers are going to really be interested in what your exact degrees are in as much as they will what experience you have and exactly what you can bring to the company. That having been said, you know a bachelors in sociology is very general. It is a very general and broad social science degree. With either a BS or BA in sociology, psychology, human development, etc, you are not a sociologist, psychologist, etc. Many people with just a bachelors in sociology may work for a social service agency, human services, a caseworker for a certain agency, etc. But, you will find that when you graduate you will have bills to pay and just because you have a degree doesn't mean that you cannot accept other jobs. Lots of college grads with 4-year degrees work at Verizon, a utility company, or even at a bank. But lots of people go back for an advanced degree to build upon what they have and obtain specialized certification for their professional job. Not to mention that when you're an undergraduate you don't always have any idea what you want to do for the rest of your life, but we have to "pick" a major. I once heard a joke tha the definition of an undergraduate major is exactly what you DON'T want to do once you graduate. But that is jut a joke. You may know exactly what it is that you want to do now. But anyways, it would most likely depend on the employer. If a company had a sociology major with a business/accounting minor and a business accounting major with a minor in another field, it would mostly seem to me that they would hire the major, as the social service agency would hire you. Not saying that you both can't perform equally on the same job, but that is just what their resume and transcript will reflect their degree in. Some jobs just want you to have a degree-they do not care what major, even the infamous "underwater basketweaving majors". I hope I've not been a discouragement to you, but not everyone knows how the world is after stepping away from university life. Just don't be afraid to start small to build up to where you know you're going. I graduated in May with a Master's degree, and I'm working 2 part-time jobs. One is at a mall and the other is more professional , but its not permanent work. I know my full-time job will come through soon, but for right now, I've still got bills to pay.
